White-naped Monarch
Carterornis pileatus
An unmistakable black-and-white songbird with a distinctive face pattern. Note the black head with white markings, the black wings with a broad white wing panel, and the white underparts. Juveniles browner on upperparts, head, and throat. Singles and pairs inhabit the upper levels of forest in the lowlands and lower hills, regularly following mixed-species flocks. Distinct within restricted range in north Moluccas. Regular vocalizations include a ringing “weee-weee-weee-weee,” a more agitated “tzit-tzit-witcheu-witcheu,” single harsh, rasping “tzit” notes, and single slurred “tcheu” notes.

This species was formerly placed in the genus Monarcha until moved to Carterornis in 2009. Some authorities have considered the white-naped monarch to be a subspecies of the white-eared monarch.<p>There are two subspecies recognized:<p>The Tanimbar monarch (C. castus), found on the Tanimbar Islands, was originally described as a separate species in the genus Monarcha, reclassified as a subspecies of C. pileatus, and again reclassified as a distinct species within Carterornis by the International Ornithological Congress in 2021.

Caroline Islands Ground Dove
Pampusana kubaryi
Beautiful dark velvet dove with a pristine white face, throat, and breast. Endemic to Chuuk and Pohnpei, in the Caroline Islands group. Inhabits forested areas, including disturbed patches adjoining agriculture. Forages actively on or close to the ground. Unlike many other doves and pigeons, flushes more or less silently; typically flies only a short distance when flushed.
Rufous-backed Antvireo
Dysithamnus xanthopterus
Big headed antbird with a heavy hooked bill and a shortish tail. Rufous above and pale below with a gray neck and face dappled with white spots. Males have a dark gray cap, rufous in females. The song is a loud and fast descending series of trembling notes. Found in the upper to middle levels of humid forests, usually with mixed-species flocks.
Black-bellied Gnateater
Conopophaga melanogaster
Large gnateater with striking plumage. Note the bold white eyebrow. Males have a black head and underparts contrasting with chestnut wings and back; on females the black is replaced by gray. Occurs patchily in humid forest with dense understory, especially bamboo, where it forages on the ground and in the understory. The song is a short angry rattle.
