Caroline Islands Ground Dove

A dull dark brown white-eye with a distinctive white forecrown, white eye-ring and throat, and pale bill and legs; eyes are also often pale. A local but common resident restricted to Mount Cameroon, found in small groups between 1800 and 2800 meters of elevation. Prefers scrub at forest margins and alpine shrubland. Gives a loud, rolling musical song, “cheet-tee-too-too-twee-too-dee-dzoo” with variations, and other soft calls. Forest White-eye is much brighter than Cameroon Speirops but may occasionally join it in flocks.

Small flycatcher with an orange chest and a white belly. Male is bright blue above, while the female is brown above with a rufous tail. Confusingly similar to many other Blue Flycatchers, but extensively blue throat and limited orange underparts serve to identify the male. Female can be trickier; look out for relatively well-defined orange breast, rufous tail, and weak eyering (but no pale lores). Found in the dense undergrowth of hill forests. Song is a rambling and variable series of whistling, warbling, and chattering notes; also gives typical Cyornis “chak” and rattle calls.

Medium-sized brownish wader with a white belly, varied pale spotting and spangling on back. In flight shows plain upperwings, square white rump patch. Legs greenish yellow. Breeds in bogs and marshes in open coniferous and mixed forests. Migrants and wintering birds occur in varied wetland habitats, especially with grassy and other vegetation cover. Walks in shallow water, picking with its bill. Mainly found as singles or small flocks, not mixed with other species. Bobs tail when nervous, but not habitually like Common Sandpiper.
