Lemon-bellied Crombec

Endemic pipit found in open habitats from coastline to alpine shrublands. Scarce in intensively farmed areas. Prominent pale eyebrow with brown streaked upper body, pale underparts and brown streaking on breast. Distinctive 'tzweep' call given year round. Repeated high-pitched 'pip-it' territorial song heard mainly in August-February. Often seen walking rather than hopping, frequently flicking their long tail when they stop, or when perched. Can form loose flocks in autumn and winter. Very similar to introduced Eurasian Skylark. Note lack of large head crest, a more slender body, and distinctive habit of wagging its long tail up and down.

Distinctive, chunky antbird with an upturned bill. Males are entirely black with a silvery-black bill; females are similar, but have a bright red-orange belly. Found in dense forest undergrowth, including in heliconia thickets, waterside vegetation, viny edge forest, and dense forest on nutrient poor soils. Forages singly or in pairs, and does not usually join mixed-species flocks. Its song is an easily-imitated, even-paced series of low whistles, given at a pace of about one note per second.

A mid-sized white barbet with red around the eyes, and a dark bill, tail and wings, endemic to a restricted portion of south-central Zambia. Immature duskier than adult. Pairs and small family groups are low-density residents in open woodland, where it is dependent on Sycamore Fig trees. The similar Black-backed Barbet differs from Chaplin’s Barbet by having a pale bill, dark back, and red and black on the crown; other pale-headed barbets lack red on the face. Call is an extended dry cackle reminiscent of a group of Green Woodhoopoes.
