Collared Imperial-Pigeon

Ducula mullerii

The large, nomadic pigeon of mangroves and riverine forests. Note the distinctive, full black collar that narrows at the front and meets the maroon back. Black tail with white band across. Small flocks often seen in flight or perched up on exposed branches. Unmistakable when seen perched, but in flight similar to Pinon’s Imperial-Pigeon. Collared Imperial-Pigeon is much more likely in mangroves. Call, a deep, muffled “woo-oo pooo” with the first 2-note call falling and the last, lower in pitch.

识别特征

The species has an average body length of 40 cm and weighs about 600 g. It has grey upperparts and largely grey-pink underparts, and is distinguished by a striking and diagnostic complete black collar against an otherwise white throat.

分类信息

The binomial commemorates the German naturalist Salomon Müller. There are two recognized subspecies: the nominate D. m. mullerii (Temminck, 1835), in lowland southern New Guinea, including the offshore islands of Boigu, Saibai and Daru, and the Aru Islands; and D. m. aurantia (A. B. Meyer, 1893) in northern New Guinea, from Bintuni Bay and the east shore of Geelvink Bay to Astrolabe Bay.

Red-tailed Newtonia

Red-tailed Newtonia

Newtonia fanovanae

Energetic and pugnacious little vanga, far more colorful than other newtonias. The head is gray, the eye black, the back reddish, and the underparts whitish. Rare and enigmatic Madagascar endemic bird that has been recorded at a handful of sites in low and middle elevation eastern rainforest. Song is a loud series of “wheet” or “chu-wheet” notes. Very similar to female of much more common Red-tailed Vanga. Identified by its smaller size, much smaller and sharper bill, and lack of a buffy ring around the eye. Dark eye and more colorful plumage separate Red-tailed from Common and Dark Newtonias.

Sumba Brown Flycatcher

Sumba Brown Flycatcher

Muscicapa segregata

An unremarkable drab, brown flycatcher, gray-brown above and pale below. Note the pale base to the bill. Juveniles have spotted upperparts. Found singly or in pairs in understory of lowland forest and edge. Limited to Sumba Island. Differs from Asian Brown Flycatcher in being shorter-winged, with a less distinct eye-ring. Separated from the larger Flores Jungle-Flycatcher and from the more rufescent Sumba Flycatcher by its bicolored bill. Song is a soft complex of disorderly high whistled notes, ending in a weak trill. Call is a thin, high-pitched whistle, “tseeoo.”

Minahasa Masked-Owl

Minahasa Masked-Owl

Tyto inexspectata

A forest barn-owl with rich rufous coloration over its entire body. Particularly note the rufous facial disk and forecrown to aid identification. Juvenile is browner-winged, with speckled gray underparts. Inhabits forest understory within lowlands and mountains, avoiding open country. Confined to Sulawesi. Smaller and more richly rufous-colored overall than Sulawesi Masked-Owl, with a rufous facial disk and forecrown and fewer dark markings on the wings and upperparts. Also note preference for closed-forest habitat. Call is a single long piercing screech: “SHEEEEEEEER.”
