Sumba Brown Flycatcher
Muscicapa segregata
An unremarkable drab, brown flycatcher, gray-brown above and pale below. Note the pale base to the bill. Juveniles have spotted upperparts. Found singly or in pairs in understory of lowland forest and edge. Limited to Sumba Island. Differs from Asian Brown Flycatcher in being shorter-winged, with a less distinct eye-ring. Separated from the larger Flores Jungle-Flycatcher and from the more rufescent Sumba Flycatcher by its bicolored bill. Song is a soft complex of disorderly high whistled notes, ending in a weak trill. Call is a thin, high-pitched whistle, “tseeoo.”

White-bellied Tit
Melaniparus albiventris
A mostly black tit with a white belly and white marks in the wings. Found in rather moist savanna and woodland and along forest edges, mostly at middle and higher elevations. Usually in pairs or small groups, and often joins mixed-species flocks. Call is a classic tit “chee-chee-di-di-di,” raspy and often repeated. The song consists of musical or slightly burry whistled phrases of 2-3 notes, each phrase repeated 2-3 times. Similar to black-tits, but easily separated by the white belly.
Bartlett's Tinamou
Crypturellus bartletti
Small tinamou of floodplain rainforest. Reddish brown with limited black barring on the wings. Found in tall lowland rainforest, especially around water and in seasonally flooded areas, and can be quite common. Listen for a series of whistles given at a pace of about one note per four seconds that gradually accelerates until about twice as fast; recalls the song of Cinereous Tinamou, but faster and usually accelerating.
Red-faced Crombec
Sylvietta whytii
Small and virtually tailless warbler with a gray back and rufous underparts. The face is completely rufous, giving it an “open” impression. Found in a variety of savanna and woodland habitat, though mostly in Miombo in the southern part of its range. The song varies geographically: can be a soft warble or a trill. The call is a short, fast, wooden rattle. Northern and Long-billed Crombecs can look similar, but Red-faced is separated by its lack of an eye stripe.
