Blue-winged Mountain Tanager

Beautifully-colored pigeon of peninsular India’s lowland and hill forests. Male has a deep velvet-red back and gray-blue crown. Female has an olive-green back and a more restricted crown patch. Song is odd and un-pigeonlike: a long ascending note followed by high undulating squeaking and bubbling noises, somewhat resembling the tuning of an old radio.

Red-and-green rosella with a yellow cheek in adults. The only rosella found in southwestern Western Australia, where it inhabits open woodland habitats and parks, usually feeding on the ground. Adult mottled green and black (or red) above, with red underparts and crown, blue rump, and blue wings. Adult male has more intense colors than female; juvenile lacks yellow cheeks and is more extensively green. Two subspecies exist, varying in back color: the inland subspecies has a green-and-black back, the southwestern subspecies a red-and-black back. Call is a slow, ringing double note; also gives chattering calls.

Mid-sized bushshrike that is completely black. Found in the undergrowth of humid forest at higher elevations. A skilled skulker that is most often detected by voice. Notable for its wide variety of vocalizations, which include whistles, explosive notes, frog-like calls, and ratchets. Also does a classic bushshrike duet in which the male sings a rising whistle accompanied by lower rasping notes from the female. Very similar to Willard’s Sooty Boubou, but prefers higher-elevation montane forest and has a dark eye.
