Amazonian Violaceous Trogon
Trogon ramonianus
Small yellow-bellied trogon of mature rainforest. Males are green with a blue head and breast and yellow eye ring, females dark gray with a broken white eye ring. Both sexes have yellow belly. Found in a variety of forested habitats, but usually a fairly uncommon species; most common in mature upland rainforest. Song is an even series of high “whew” notes, often sounding vaguely disyllabic, “whe-ew”; usually higher pitched and less breathy than Black-tailed.

Eurasian Eagle-Owl
Bubo bubo
Very large and powerful owl with obvious ear tufts, deep orange eyes, and finely streaked pale buffy underparts. Active mainly at night, but can be seen perched up on prominent lookouts at dusk, searching for prey. Can be found roosting during the day in shady canopy or caves. Pairs often duet, with the male giving a deep, resounding hoot and the female giving a hoarser, higher-pitched one. Inhabits a wide range of habitats, from forests to rocky canyons, but generally abundant nowhere.

Scaly Spurfowl
Pternistis squamatus
Medium-sized dull-brown francolin with a red bill and legs. Varies geographically; eastern birds are darker. Found in montane forest, forest edge, secondary scrub, plantations, and bamboo. Shy, and difficult to see, except when crossing a road or path. The call is a series of very rough notes which become quicker and more emphatic. Separated from Handsome and Red-necked Francolins by the lack of red bare skin around the eye.
