White-throated Jacamar

Brachygalba albogularis

Small, distinctive jacamar of riverways and forest clearings in lowland rainforest. More social than larger jacamars, often encountered in small groups. Chocolate brown, with a cream-colored face and bill. Flycatches around the edges of forest clearings, often near water; also found in swampy forest and marsh edges. Call is a high, bisyllabic squeak: “peeweet?”; song is a high, accelerating series of whistles.

识别特征

The white-throated jacamar is 15 to 16 cm (5.9 to 6.3 in) long. The male is distinguished by its white face and throat; its upper parts are dark brown to black with a greenish blue gloss. The belly is also dark brown to black with a chestnut patch in its center. The female is similar, though its chestnut patch may be larger.

分类信息

The white-throated jacamar is monotypic. It and the dusky-backed (B. salmoni), pale-headed (B. goeringi), and brown jacamars (B. lugubris) form a superspecies.

分布与栖息地

The white-throated jacamar is found in a small area of the upper Amazon Basin where eastern Peru, western Brazil, and northern Bolivia abut. It inhabits the edges of primary várzea forest or young growth along whitewater rivers. Examples of the latter include river islands and Gynerium cane and bamboo stands. It is mostly found from mid level up to the canopy. In elevation it has been recorded up to 600 m (2,000 ft) in Peru.

行为

The white-throated jacamar's diet is poorly known, but Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera have been identified. It perches in small groups on exposed branches in the canopy and sallies from there to catch its flying prey.
One detailed study of the white-throated jacamar's breeding phenology was in Peru's Manu National Park. Nests were found in August and September; they were partially hidden burrows in vertical stream banks. Up to four adults provisioned the young.
The white-throated jacamar's song is " a high, thin series of whistles...'pee-pipi-peeee tewee tewee tewee'" [1]. Its call is "a plaintive upslurred 'psueet' or 'kuweei'" [2].

Ferruginous Duck

Ferruginous Duck

Aythya nyroca

Rich rusty brown overall with contrasting white triangular patch under tail; male has pale eye. Also note peaked crown and rather long gray bill. In flight, both sexes show bold white wing stripe. Compare with female Tufted Duck (can have similar white patch under tail). Inhabits lakes and marshes, usually with surrounding reeds. Rather shy and often stays hidden in reeds, but at other times out in open water with flocks of Tufted Duck and Common Pochard.

Plain Pigeon

Plain Pigeon

Patagioenas inornata

A large pale pigeon of woodlands and forest edges; often found perching high in trees. Its ruddy shoulders and unbanded tail readily separate it from the similar Ring-tailed Pigeon. When perched, note the whispy whitish leading edge to wing, seen as a bar on upperwing in flight, that is suggestive of White-winged Dove, but that species has brighter white wing markings and is smaller. Scaly-naped and White-crowned Pigeons are much darker. Call is a soft, deep “HOOO-hoo-hoooo” and variations thereof but never similar to “oooOOO-hooo” of Ring-tailed Pigeon.

Yellow-breasted Tailorbird

Yellow-breasted Tailorbird

Orthotomus samarensis

A small, long-billed, long-tailed bird of dense undergrowth in lowland forest on Bohol, Leyte, and Samar islands. Olive-green on the back and wings, with an orange-brown tail often held cocked, yellow underparts, a thin yellow line around the back of the neck, and a black cap. Female has a white throat with some streaking around the edge, while the male has a black bib and a small white chin. Similar in size and shape to Rufous-fronted Tailorbird, but has yellow underparts and a black head. Voice includes monotonous piping notes given in series.
