Bacan Myzomela
Myzomela batjanensis
A small honeyeater with a short, downcurved bill. Striking male shows a scarlet head, back, and rump, a contrastingly dark tail and wings, and a whitish belly. Female and juvenile are entirely gray-brown, sometimes with a rusty-red wash on the face and throat. Females and immatures may be confused with Dusky Myzomela, but that species is larger, darker, and lacks red. Males on Obi have a reddish breast, and may represent a separate taxa. Found singly or in pairs at upper levels of montane and hill forest. Song is a short, high-pitched, and buzzy rising series, “bzze-bzee-bzee!-bzeee!-bzeet!” Also gives squeaky “bijee!” Formerly treated as a subspecies of Sulawesi Myzomela.

Collared Bush-Robin
Tarsiger johnstoniae
Male is unmistakable, with a glowing silver supercilium, black hood, and fiery orange shoulder and collar. Female is more somber in plumage, brownish above, buffy below, with a trace of the male's pale brow. White-browed Bush-Robin is superficially similar, but darker gray above, with a more prominent supercilium. Inhabits montane regions, often in forest edge or open areas above the treeline.

Distinctive finch-like bird restricted to cloud forest Andes of western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador. Plumage is chestnut-brown with a black head and silvery stripes on face and crown. Sexes look alike. Typically encountered alone or in pairs; stays low in dense vegetation, often along roadsides, and does not join mixed-species flocks. Song is a high-pitched, buzzy series of notes which may be repeated many times in a row.

Large dove found in mature montane forests from the western U.S. and Canada into Middle and South America. Soft blue-gray above and unique purplish-gray below, with white crescent on the nape. Yellow feet. Bill is yellow with black tip in northern populations, all yellow in southern ones. Forms large flocks in coniferous forests and montane areas where it feeds on seeds and fruits. When it takes off, wings make loud clapping sound.
