White-rimmed Brushfinch
Atlapetes leucopis
A rare and striking finch-like bird restricted to cloud forest of the Andes of Ecuador and southern Colombia. It is black with an olive breast and belly and a chestnut crown; the bold, white “spectacles” set it apart from any other bird in range. Sexes look alike. Typically encountered alone or in pairs; stays low, and usually remains in dense cover. Often first detected by its song, which consists of a series of sweet whistles and chirps; it sings faster and mixes in rapid trills when agitated.

Rufous-bellied Euphonia
Euphonia rufiventris
Small finch-like bird of lowland rainforest. Male is glossy navy blue with a deep red-orange belly, fairly distinctive in its range; female is golden with gray wash on the head, back, and belly, and orange-red undertail coverts. Females similar to females of Orange-bellied Euphonia, but usually have deeper orange or red undertail coverts (not yellow). Found in humid forests, where often one of the most common euphonias. Frequently heard giving a rapid, deep chatter “chree-chree-chree-chree.”

Yellow-billed Tit-Tyrant
Anairetes flavirostris
Active little bird of scrubby and brushy habitats in drier regions of the Andes and locally in the lowlands of Argentina. Often in pairs, hopping in bushes and weeds and can be difficult to see well. Best identified by bold blackish striping on breast and wispy black crest. Note the base of bill is bright orange (not yellow!), but difficult to see in the field.

Black-and-white-casqued Hornbill
Bycanistes subcylindricus
Big, spectacular, black-and-white hornbill. The males have a large black-and-white bill, and females a much smaller all-dark one. In flight, shows a broad white patch at the back of the wing and a black tail with white sides. Found in thick forest and adjacent areas of lush woodland and cultivation. Usually in pairs or small groups. The loud calls are honking and yapping notes that are often given in a quick series. Similar to White-thighed and Brown-cheeked Hornbills, but has a black center to the tail, and the wingtips are black. Also has a darker bill and casque than those species.
