Rufous Mourner

Scarce hummingbird that looks similar to a hermit. Look for buffy patch across the base of the neck, bold whitish flashes in the tail, and a fairly long, slightly decurved bill. Face pattern is rather diffuse, but look for the whitish mustache and pale line behind the eye. Found in the understory of forest and edges in lowlands and foothills below around 1,100 m where it stays low, quickly zipping around flower patches.

A chunky, iridescent, deep-purple dove of dense forests and coffee plantations. It is typically found on the ground walking among the leaf litter, sometimes in company of Ruddy or Key West Quail-Doves. Its unstriped head, white forehead spot, and iridescent purple body eliminates other species within range. Song is a “oop-oop…” given without pause, sometimes for several minutes.

The default pipit across much of Africa. Brown above and pale below, with a streaked back, well-marked face, and white outer tail feathers. There is considerable geographic variation, from pale and sandy to rich brown and rufous. Found in a variety of open and usually grassy habitats, both near water and in dry areas. Call is a sneezing “tzsht”. Song comprises consecutive series of rattles, given in flight. Very similar to other pipits; some of the key features to look for include the yellow base of the bill, streaked back, and white outer tail feathers.
