Streak-breasted Scimitar-Babbler

Plump, terrestrial partridge-like bird with a short stout bill, red eye, chestnut crown, orange eyebrow, gray throat and belly, and mottled brown back. Usually encountered in small groups scampering across the ground in lowland Atlantic Forest. Song is a loud, fast, and repetitive “kloh-kloh-klohkloh.”

Majestic adults have blackish-brown body with white head and tail. Several stages of immature plumages aren't quite as majestic, from fully dark brown to messy and mottled with large patches of white. Look especially for white mottling on the belly on immatures. Scavenges and hunts near bodies of water. Soars with wings flat, like a large, dark plank. Head appears large in flight; projects far in front of wings. Surprisingly weak-sounding vocalization is a series of high-pitched whistles.

A very small and striking gray, white, and black flycatcher-like bird with a very dark crown, a yellow eye, white wingbars, and a white spot above the bill base. Sexes similar. Juvenile has neck and wing washed buffy. Pairs are rare and localized residents in the middle levels and the canopy of secondary and primary lowland forest, below 1300 meters of elevation. The larger Rwenzori Batis has a broader breast band than Ituri Batis and tends to occur in montane forest above 1400 meters.
