Black-tailed Crake

Large, long-billed robin that spends much of its time on the ground with tail cocked. The male has bluish upperparts, a dark face, a white supercilium, a broad black tail, and bright orange underparts. The female has gray underparts, a faintly mottled breast, a whitish throat, and orange sides. Breeds on high-altitude mountain slopes covered with dense scrub. On migration shows up in a variety of scrubby habitats. Calls similar to nightingales, including clear whistles and a low croak.

Unmistakable gray bulbul with a striking white head, rose-red bill, and orange vent. Passingly similar to white-headed forms of unrelated Black Bulbul but lacks shaggy crest, dark vent, and inky-black body of that species. Gives harsh, chattering, somewhat parrot-like calls while flocking. Song is a repetitive and squeaky series of distinct two-note phrases. Breeds in foothills and montane areas, preferring open forests and forest edges. Descends into foothills and lowlands during non-breeding season.

A medium-sized bird of lowland forest edge and clearings. Distinctive plumage. Mainly black, bright red above and below the base of the tail, and white marks on the cheek and back. Perches in tall trees, sallying for flying insects. Very similar to Mountain Peltops, but Lowland is found at lower elevations and has a smaller white cheek. Voice, a double note rap, “plik-it!” repeated at regular intervals. Also, a distinctive, unbirdlike, vibrating rattle.
