Slender-billed Scimitar-Babbler
Pomatorhinus superciliaris
Possibly the species to which the moniker of “scimitar-babbler” attaches most fittingly, as this inhabitant of high-altitude evergreen forests has a bill shaped like a curved sword. Predominantly orange-brown, with a gray head and jagged white eyebrow. Easily identified, even if seen only in silhouette; no other babbler in its range has such a long, sharply curved bill. Moves through the lower levels of the forest in large, noisy flocks.

Frilled Coquette
Lophornis magnificus
Tiny hummingbird that is gray and green above and gray below. Like other coquettes it has a white bar across the rump. Males are astonishingly pretty with an orange crest, a ruff of white and green feathers on the neck, and a red bill with a black tip. Females have a white belly, and spotted throat, lacking the male’s crest and orange bill. Found at forest edges, in second growth habitats and in wooded savanna.

Serra Antwren
Formicivora serrana
Small, strikingly-plumaged antbird with a long tail and a very restricted range. Inhabits the understory of low stature or regenerating forests, forest edges, scrub, and abandoned plantations where it is very active and occasionally joins mixed-species flocks. Much plumage variation, with coastal males near Rio de Janeiro (formerly split as Restinga Antwren) being almost uniformly sooty-black with only slightly grayer back and spotted white wingbars. Two more northerly subspecies vary between rufous-brown and dark gray above, but both are black below with a bold white eyebrow and white wing spots. In all subspecies, females are pale whitish below and brown above with a bold white eyebrow. Male song is a monotonous series of harsh chip notes; female gives nasal squeaks.

Singing Honeyeater
Gavicalis virescens
Medium-sized honeyeater with an olive-brown back and pale gray underparts. Size and plumage varies considerably across its range. This species tends to favor inland locations, and is found in a wide variety of habitats. Widespread across Australia, and is present in most areas apart from the eastern coast.
