Temminck's Seedeater

One of several new antpittas that were previously considered to be forms of what was then called Rufous Antpitta. Panao Antpitta is restricted to a small area of the eastern Andes in central Peru east of the city of Huánuco. Plumage is mainly chestnut brown but is slightly brighter below and has a pale belly patch that is hard to see. Similar to Oxapampa Antpitta, but usually shows a faint, partial eyering and has a different voice. Gives a short “dit-purr” as well as a burst of squeaky notes that rises and speeds up at the end. Inhabits high elevation cloud forest and normally stays on the ground unless singing.

Beautiful small bunting of lowlands and foothills; endemic to west Mexico. Occurs in brushy woodland and edge, adjacent weedy fields, and open grassy areas. Often in small groups, feeding on roadside grasses and flushing up with brilliant blue flashes. Also feeds at all levels in fruiting trees and bushes. Male unmistakable: electric turquoise blue and green above; rich yellow below with a burnished orange breast. Female duller overall: greenish above and yellow below, with a bluish tail. Female brighter yellowish below than slightly larger female Painted Bunting.

Small yellowish bird; note bold wingbars and face pattern with short pale eyebrow and arc under the eye. Yellow underparts sometimes bright, sometimes paler whitish, but always some yellow tones. Could be mistaken for a tyrannulet but note thicker bill and more horizontal posture. Usually seen singly or in pairs, following a mixed-species flock through forest, edge, and second growth. Found at relatively high elevations in its limited range. Song is a slow series of short phrases, like a squeaky Yellow-throated Vireo.
