Tanzanian Red-billed Hornbill
Tockus ruahae
A fairly small, slim, long-tailed hornbill. Note the red bill, the dark eye with a ring of black skin, and the heavily spotted back. White patches on the wing and outer tail are conspicuous in flight. Found locally in moderately moist savanna and woodland, usually in areas with baobabs and acacias. Similar to Northern Red-billed Hornbill, but separated by the black rather than pale bare skin around the eye. Call is a series of clucks that starts with single notes, then becomes louder and more emphatic, with doubled notes.
识别特征
Tanzanian red-billed hornbills (Tockus ruahae) are small hornbills in the group of the red-billed hornbills. They have curved, bright red bills that end in a small dot of dark orange. Their sclera can vary from light orange to dark yellow and their pupils are usually dark black. Like most species of hornbills, they support medium-sized circles of black skin around their eyes, both in females and males. They have greyish-white necks and bellies and their wings, like all red billed hornbills, have large and small spots of white surrounded by black feathers. Their tail feathers are long and black on the exterior and white on the interior.

Black-chinned Fruit-Dove
Ptilinopus leclancheri
Portly green dove of tropical lowland forest canopy. Male unmistakable, with cream-white head, neck, and upper breast contrasting with dark wings, tail, and body. Male’s black chin very difficult to see. Female a dark mossy green with a contrasting pale yellow bill, unlike any other pigeon in its range. Generally uncommon and unobtrusive. Song a deep, throaty “rrrooooooo” that does not carry far.

White-cheeked Nuthatch
Sitta leucopsis
Small nuthatch with a large-eyed appearance. Blue-gray above and white below with a black crown and rusty sides. Very similar in appearance to the closely-related Przewalski’s Nuthatch, but no range overlap. Inhabits coniferous and mixed forests in the Himalayan foothills; male frequently perches on the tops of conifers during breeding season, giving an odd waggling display. Calls loudly and frequently with an insistent series of flat nasal bleats.

Sulphur-bellied Tyrannulet
Mecocerculus minor
This uncommon tyrannulet is found in the Andes from extreme western Venezuela to Peru. Look for a combination of yellow underparts, white eyebrow, gray crown, and buffy wingbars. Like other members of its genus, tends to perch horizontally, which helps separate it from similarly-plumaged bristle-tyrants. Singles or pairs forage with mixed-species flock, usually in the canopy or subcanopy. Occurs in subtropical forests and edges from around 1,600 to 2,800 m. Listen for squeaky series of “chew” notes.
