White-cheeked Nuthatch
Sitta leucopsis
Small nuthatch with a large-eyed appearance. Blue-gray above and white below with a black crown and rusty sides. Very similar in appearance to the closely-related Przewalski’s Nuthatch, but no range overlap. Inhabits coniferous and mixed forests in the Himalayan foothills; male frequently perches on the tops of conifers during breeding season, giving an odd waggling display. Calls loudly and frequently with an insistent series of flat nasal bleats.

Southern Hill Myna
Gracula indica
Glossy black myna of southern India and Sri Lanka. Note white wing patches, bright orange bill, and yellow head wattles. Inhabits foothill forests, where it is most often encountered high up in the canopy in pairs or small flocks. Gives various croaks and screams, but is less vocally accomplished than the very similar Common Hill Myna, which does not overlap in range.

White-winged Scoter
Melanitta deglandi
Large scoter, with distinctive white patch on wing. Dark chocolate-brown overall; males are darker than females and have small white mark under eye, dark knob on the bill, and pink bill tip. Females have two rounded white patches on face. At a distance, separated from Surf Scoter by more sloping head shape and white in the wing. Winters on coastal waters and large freshwater lakes. Occasionally found on large inland lakes during migration. Dives frequently, feeding on mollusks and crustaceans.

Red-tailed Minla
Minla ignotincta
Boldly marked small babbler, usually seen foraging actively and acrobatically at middle levels. Often flips upside down on branches and climbs trunks like a nuthatch. Found in both mixed and single-species flocks. Unmistakable; bold white brow on a black head, contrasting with pale undersides and rose-red panels on the wings and tail, are completely unique.
