Flores Sea Cuckoo-Dove

Relatively plain and unmarked green-pigeon with a long pointed tail. Males have a faint orange blush on the chest, though this can be hard to notice. Note blue-green bill and “goggles” in both sexes. Completely unmarked dark olive-green wings separate this species from other green-pigeons within its range; Wedge-tailed Green-Pigeon can be similar, but note that species’ much more thickset build and shorter tail. Endemic to the hill forests of Sumatra and western Java. Like other green-pigeons, gathers in fruiting trees. Gives rising and falling series of high-pitched coos, often with a hiccuping or sobbing quality.

A woodland species that also ventures into parks and gardens. Often found in groups of up to five foraging at middle to upper heights and uncommonly joins mixed-species flocks. Note this species’ black cheek, which is bordered below by broad white moustache stripes and above by a gray crown. The similar Black-crowned Palm-Tanager has an entirely white throat and a black crown. Vocalizations are poorly known, but include a high thin “tseeoo” that is briefer than similar note of Black-crowned.

Striking and rare, this antpitta is found in humid foothill forest from Costa Rica to Colombia. It is quite plump and very short-tailed, with a hefty hooked bill. Distinctive plumage with black crown and throat, rufous cheek, and boldly scalloped black-and-white belly. Singles or pairs are denizens of the forest understory, usually found on or near the ground. Most likely to be found following an army ant swarm. Listen for a fast series of piping notes and harsh “wick wick wick” scolding calls.
