Black-crowned Antpitta
Pittasoma michleri
Striking and rare, this antpitta is found in humid foothill forest from Costa Rica to Colombia. It is quite plump and very short-tailed, with a hefty hooked bill. Distinctive plumage with black crown and throat, rufous cheek, and boldly scalloped black-and-white belly. Singles or pairs are denizens of the forest understory, usually found on or near the ground. Most likely to be found following an army ant swarm. Listen for a fast series of piping notes and harsh “wick wick wick” scolding calls.

The black-crowned antpitta is one of two species in the genus Pittasoma. They are not in the antpitta family (Grallaridae). It was formerly placed in the antthrush family (Formicariidae) before being included in the antpitta family when it was split from the antthrushes. They were reclassified and placed in the family Conopophagidae based on DNA evidence. This placement is further supported by morphology, vocalisations and traits in their natural history.<p>The generic name Pittasoma comes from the genus Pitta and the Greek sōma, meaning "body". The specific name is in honor of Brigadier-General Nathaniel Michler. Alternative names for the black-crowned antpitta include the black-crowned pittasoma or black-crowned gnatpitta.<p>There are two recognised subspecies:

The black-crowned antpitta is found in Panama, Costa Rica, and northwestern Colombia. It mostly inhabits altitudes between 300 and 1000 m in Costa Rica, but is also found in lowlands in Panama.

Blue-winged Pitta
Pitta moluccensis
A beautiful, rainbow-colored inhabitant of tropical forests; often bolder than other pittas and occasionally seen in city parks, especially while on migration. Stunning, with green back, blue wings, orange belly, and black mask. Solitary outside of the breeding season; usually seen hopping around in leaf litter and turning over debris in search of invertebrates. Listen for its bouncy song, a series of loud “weuh-wheew!” phrases.
White-throated Crake
Laterallus albigularis
Small marsh bird, very difficult to see as it creeps through dense grass. Far more easily heard: listen for a loud descending chatter that lasts several seconds. If you are lucky enough to spot one, look for the combination of rich rufous neck and sides of breast, whitish throat, and barred black-and-white flanks. Favors damp pastures and marshes, where it usually stays hidden but occasionally runs through open areas.
Western Mountain Greenbul
Arizelocichla tephrolaema
A large, vocal greenbul of montane forest and forest edge, found only in the highlands of Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea), Cameroon, and eastern Nigeria. Has an olive-green body, a more yellow-green belly, an ashy-gray head, dark reddish eyes surrounded by white partial eye-arcs, and a solid black bill. Calls include repetitive chatters, sometimes ending with “kekeKOWLP!”, and repeated “chup-chup-chupup” type notes.
