Red-throated Crag-Martin
Ptyonoprogne rufigula
A subtly colored member of the swallow family. Dark brown on the back with paler underparts. The forked tail has white spots, though these are not always easy to see. The “red throat” amounts to a slight pinkish tinge. Nests in canyons, escarpments, gorges, and on human structures. Often seen in pairs or small groups. At a distance, can be confused with “Riparia” martins; look for Pale Crag-Martin’s white tail patches. Separation from Southern Crag-Martin may be tricky, but there is little overlap in range.

Pileated Woodpecker
Dryocopus pileatus
Large, unmistakable woodpecker. Mostly black, with red crest and bold white stripes on head and neck. Flies with deep, rowing wingbeats, almost like a crow but more irregular; also look for mostly white underwings and white patches on upperwing. Pairs inhabit mature deciduous or coniferous forests with large trees. Makes large oval-shaped holes in decaying trees to search for insects. Listen for slow resonant drumming and loud clucking calls. Occasionally visits feeders in appropriate habitat, especially fond of suet.

Cinnamon-tailed Sparrow
Peucaea sumichrasti
Very local and often elusive sparrow endemic to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Found in brushy woodland and edge of tropical lowlands on Pacific slope. Usually in pairs or small groups, which keep in touch with high, rhythmic twittering choruses. Mostly stays low in brush or on the ground, but sings from atop bushes. Note the subtly distinctive face pattern with double dark whisker stripes, pinkish bottom bill, and long orangish tail.

Strange-tailed Tyrant
Alectrurus risora
Striking flycatcher with a spectacular mating display, in which male flies high into the air and repeatedly pumps tails above and then below body. Endemic to the Iberá marshes of NE Argentina and E Paraguay. Male unmistakable. Female from other whitish flycatcher by orange throat, pale peach bill, and elongated tail. Prefers flooded grasslands with tall, undisturbed grasses, and is thus threatened by cattle grazing.
