Pale-crowned Cisticola
Cisticola cinnamomeus
Tiny, short-tailed, streaky, brown cisticola. Distinctive breeding male has a pale crown and dark lores. Female and non-breeding male have a streaked crown. Found in moist grassland. Inconspicuous for most of the year. Usually seen when doing a flight display over its breeding habitat. The song consists of high whistles alternated with several lower “cheewa” notes. Breeding male distinguished from Cloud, Wing-snapping, and other small cisticolas by its unstreaked pale crown. Female and non-breeding male may only be distinguishable by voice.

Black-throated Shrikebill
Clytorhynchus nigrogularis
A distinctive shrikebill; male is large and brown with a striking black face, a pure white ear patch, and a heavy, upturned bill. Female much plainer, with mostly brown plumage. Prefers dense native forest, avoiding open areas and secondary growth. Female similar to Fiji Shrikebill but larger, with a much heavier bill. Gives a mix of long, mournful whistles and harsh scolding chatters.

Horned Sungem
Heliactin bilophus
Stunning hummingbird with a short straight bill. Males have a dark blue crown with red, blue, and gold tufted “horns” on the side. Otherwise largely metallic green above and white below with a black throat. Females have a green cap and lack the horns. Found in riverine belts and open savanna grasslands; may venture into adjacent human-modified habitats.
