Chestnut-bellied Partridge

Arborophila javanica

Brilliantly colored small partridge of montane and foothill forests. Often difficult to see in the gloom and tangle of shaded vegetation, but note slate-gray back and chest, rusty belly, and bright orange-and-black face pattern. Like other Arborophila partridges, typically forages on the forest floor in small groups. Song is a fast and gradually rising series of “whew” notes; when duetting, one bird gives the aforementioned song while its partner gives a slower, lower-pitched “boo-goo, boo-goo, boo-goo.”

The chestnut-bellied partridge was formally described in 1789 by the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin in his revised and expanded edition of Carl Linnaeus's Systema Naturae. He placed it with all the grouse like birds in the genus Tetrao and coined the binomial name Tetrao javanicus. Gmelin based his description on the "Javan partridge" that had been described and illustrated in 1776 by the English naturalist Peter Brown. The chestnut-bellied partridge is now one of around twenty species placed in the genus Arborophila that was introduced in 1837 by the English naturalist Brian Houghton Hodgson. The genus name combines the Latin arbor, arboris meaning "tree" with the Ancient Greek philos meaning "-loving".<p>Two subspecies of chestnut-bellied partridge are recognized:

Chestnut-backed Owlet

Chestnut-backed Owlet

Glaucidium castanotum

Small owl lacking ear tufts, with chestnut mantle and pale belly with streaked flanks. Crepuscular and diurnal, occurring singly or in pairs in wet rainforest, or neighboring woods. Chestnut back and streaked flanks of Chestnut-backed Owlet separate it from the similar Jungle Owlet, and Chestnut-backed also prefers the wetter region of the island. Call is a series of barbet like “kurr-kurr-kurr” notes, often followed by harsh “kao-kao” yaps, similar to Jungle Owlet, but slightly lower-pitched.

Boreal Chickadee

Boreal Chickadee

Poecile hudsonicus

Restricted to coniferous forests in the far northern U.S. and Canada. Similar in size and shape to other chickadees, but with unique color pattern: brown cap, black throat, and rich orange-buff flanks. Typically fairly shy; can be difficult to get a good view as it sneaks through the dense spruces. Voice sounds like a wheezy Black-capped Chickadee; slower with more slurred notes.

Juan Fernandez Petrel

Juan Fernandez Petrel

Pterodroma externa

Large, rather long-tailed, and relatively big-billed petrel of offshore subtropical and tropical waters in the eastern and central Pacific; not seen from mainland. Named for Juan Fernandez Islands in Chile, where the species breeds. Main identification features are relatively large size, gleaming white underparts with small black “comma” on bend of underwing, and dark cap blending into gray of hindneck. Upperparts show darker “M” pattern common to many petrels. Much larger than Masatierra Petrel and other small petrels.
