Boat-billed Tody-Tyrant
Hemitriccus josephinae
Tiny, inconspicuous flycatcher with an oversized bill. Plumage generally olive above and yellow below, with faint breast mottling; most readily identified by its large, long bill with entirely pale mandible. A rare resident of tall rainforest, where it seems to prefer areas with many dense vine tangles. Usually encountered alone, sitting deep inside a vine tangle in the mid-story and making short sallies to foliage for insects. Almost always first detected by voice: a series of two or three short hollow notes, somewhat musical and descending in pitch. Unlikely to be confused if seen well, on account of its large bill. Voice is somewhat similar to that of Pelzeln’s Tody-Tyrant but is deeper and seldom exceeds three notes; the two species occupy entirely different habitats.

White-crested Tiger-Heron
Tigriornis leucolopha
A shy, stout heron that forages alone near water in dense lowland forest and mangroves. The tail is often hidden by the wings, giving these birds a very front-heavy appearance. The distinctive white crest is often hidden by the barred black-and-brown plumage covering most of the body. Call is a deep, far-carrying boom, as is typical of most large bitterns.

Silver-backed Butcherbird
Cracticus argenteus
Medium-sized ambush-hunter with a long gray bill with a dark, hooked tip. Black head and face with a white nape and chin. Upperparts very pale gray, with white rump, outer part of wings black, inner part of wings white, and black tail with white tip. Rollicking, chuckling song.

Painted Parakeet
Pyrrhura picta
Beautifully patterned small parakeet found in northern South America. Mostly green body with a dark red belly and maroon tail. Complex head pattern: mostly deep brownish-maroon with pale cheek, blue crown, and scaly breast. Found in forests, edges, and savannah mostly in lowlands and foothills. Typically seen in fast-flying flocks, but look for them feeding in fruiting trees.
