Dusky Piha

Sizeable nightbird with deep black eyes and wispy pale whiskers above its eyes that give it the appearance of a distinguished professor. Warm, pale, brown overall with bright white spots on the wings. Despite its size, this lowland rainforest giant can be cryptic and difficult to find; roosts under cover by day and hunts from a perch by night. Favors undisturbed primary forest, but also occasionally in disturbed areas. Song is a mellow rolling tremolo; calls include barks and screeches. 

A pale, mid-sized petrel with white underparts, dark cap, white forehead, and black margins to the white underwing. In flight, also note the distinctive, dark “M” on the gray upperparts. Easy, buoyant flight in calm weather, often gaining height and gliding down towards the ocean surface. Wheels high and steeply in strong weather.

An unmistakable black-and-white songbird with a distinctive face pattern. Note the black head with white markings, the black wings with a broad white wing panel, and the white underparts. Juveniles browner on upperparts, head, and throat. Singles and pairs inhabit the upper levels of forest in the lowlands and lower hills, regularly following mixed-species flocks. Distinct within restricted range in north Moluccas. Regular vocalizations include a ringing “weee-weee-weee-weee,” a more agitated “tzit-tzit-witcheu-witcheu,” single harsh, rasping “tzit” notes, and single slurred “tcheu” notes.
