Pale Martin
Riparia diluta
Small dull swallow, brown above and white below, with a sharp brown chest band. Nearly identical to Bank Swallow, with which it breeds sympatrically and overlaps on migration, but look for a slightly less well-defined lower border to the cheek patch and a slightly paler, more diffuse breast band. Voice also differs subtly, Pale gives primarily series of dry notes with a more trilling quality than Bank Swallow’s. Similarly picky in its nesting locales, limited only to sandy hillsides and banks, often near a water source.

Blue Nuthatch
Sitta azurea
Not the only blue nuthatch, but the bluest nuthatch. Unmistakable, with a dark head, pale eyering, white throat and breast, and dark-lined pale blue feathers on the wings. Gives quick, sharp, nasal “tzwp” or “tzwit” notes. Clambers up and down tree trunks, often in small parties; frequent member of mixed-species foraging flocks. Favors montane and hilly forests.

Rainbow Pitta
Pitta iris
Small black and green pitta with red undertail coverts and gleaming blue shoulder. Primarily green upperparts, with underparts mostly black head and underparts. Usually found feeding on the ground in rainforest patches with lots of leaf litter but has also been found in a wide variety of other habitats. During breeding season it can be quite vocal, particularly males. This is the only pitta resident in the Top End of the Northern Territory and in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
