Wetar Figbird

Breathtakingly majestic inhabitant of high and remote mountain ranges, where they build large nests on cliff ledges or in caves. Even as a distant speck, this is an unmistakable raptor, with an almost albatross-like wing shape and span, coupled with a long diamond-shaped tail. Adults are orange-rust below with a dark underwing, and slate gray above. The young are gray with a dark head. Cruises along ridgetops on flat wings, sometimes arched downwards.

Heavily patterned terrestrial bird of eastern South Australia, northwestern Victoria, and western New South Wales. White eyebrow and moustache, with a deep chestnut-brown back and intricately patterned wing. Female has white belly and gray chest, male white belly, gray flanks, and black chest and throat. Note gray sides rather than warm brown sides of Cinnamon and Chestnut-breasted quail-thrushes. Usually seen walking around in areas of open mallee woodland and shrubland. Call a long, high-pitched whistled "seeeep."

An unmistakable black-and-white songbird with a distinctive face pattern. Note the black head with white markings, the black wings with a broad white wing panel, and the white underparts. Juveniles browner on upperparts, head, and throat. Singles and pairs inhabit the upper levels of forest in the lowlands and lower hills, regularly following mixed-species flocks. Distinct within restricted range in north Moluccas. Regular vocalizations include a ringing “weee-weee-weee-weee,” a more agitated “tzit-tzit-witcheu-witcheu,” single harsh, rasping “tzit” notes, and single slurred “tcheu” notes.
