Slender-billed Starling
Onychognathus tenuirostris
A large starling with a long, tapered tail and a long, thin bill. The base color is blue-black in males, dark gray in females. The wings have a large red patch that is conspicuous in flight. Found in a variety of habitats at middle and high elevation, including forest, moorland, cliffs, and sometimes human structures. Often forms large flocks. Gives a variety of calls, including a clear “cheed-lit,” harsh rasps, and long conversational series. Similar to Red-winged Starling, but has a longer, more tapered tail and a slimmer bill.

Mountain Wren-Babbler
Gypsophila crassa
This small mouse-like undergrowth inhabitant can be difficult to spot in the tangled, well-shaded montane forest ravines, gullies, and streams it favors. Listen for its song, a series of high, distinct piping whistles: “hi-hee-hu-huh-hi” or variants thereof. Can be quite inquisitive, allowing close approach; look for a small chunky brown bird with elegant pale eyebrows, an overall brown body with strong streaking, and a contrasting pale throat. Eyebrowed Wren-Babbler overlaps marginally in range but averages lower in elevational preference; it also has white spots on the wings and a different song.
Buru Green-Pigeon
Treron aromaticus
A brightly-colored green pigeon confined to the island of Buru. Mainly green, with pale markings in the wing forming a striking band. Males have a chestnut back, females a green one like the main body color. As it is the only Treron green-pigeon in its very limited range, there is little potential for confusion with similar species. Currently, the voice remains undescribed.
Blue-breasted Fairywren
Malurus pulcherrimus
Small bird with a very long blue-gray tail held cocked, found from southwestern Western Australia to the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia, where it prefers coastal heath and drier woodland areas. Breeding male has a bright blue helmet, bluish-black breast, blue patch on back, and chestnut shoulders. Female grayish overall, with long blue-gray tail and reddish bill. Nonbreeding male resembles female but has black bill and narrow pale eyering.
