Mountain Serpent-Eagle
Spilornis kinabaluensis
Small, striking eagle with broad, rounded wings. Broad white wing bands and base to tail prominent in flight. At rest, note dark head and chestnut underparts. Darker overall than similar Crested Serpent-Eagle and appears longer-winged in flight. Adult Blyth’s Hawk-Eagle can be similar in flight, but appears smaller-headed, with more intricately-marked underwings. Restricted to north Bornean montane forest, where it can often be seen soaring above ridges. Gives a short, shrill scream.

The mountain serpent eagle (Spilornis kinabaluensis), also known as the Kinabalu serpent eagle, is a bird of prey that is found in northern Borneo. It is found at altitudes of 1,000–4,100 metres (3,300–13,500 ft) in forest, especially where it becomes stunted. Where their range overlaps, the crested serpent eagle generally occurs at lower altitudes. The mountain serpent eagle is darker than the Bornean subspecies of the crested serpent eagle. The mountain serpent eagle is threatened by habitat loss. However, they occur within the Kinabalu National Park and the Gunung Mulu National Park. Their high-altitude habitats are usually too remote for logging and agriculture, making some of its range secure.

Canada Warbler
Cardellina canadensis
Spiffy warbler found in boggy areas. Blue-gray above and yellow below with distinctive yellow spectacles and necklace of black streaks. Legs are pale orange. Females show fainter necklace than males. Typically found in low vegetation, especially wet woods and thickets. Nests on the ground. Feeds on insects. One of the longest-distance migrant warblers; winters in South America.

Somewhat recalling a darker, smaller Azure-winged Magpie, this medium-sized babbler is found in foothill to montane forests from central China to far southern Vietnam. Generally one of the most common birds in pristine hill forest throughout much of its range, and often a main component of mixed flocks. Typically moves through the canopy, though may descend lower, even occasionally to the ground when foraging.
Yellow-faced Parrot
Alipiopsitta xanthops
A very distinctive mostly green parrot with a yellow face, a yellowish belly, and orange-red thighs. Note the dark upper bill. Tends to prefer drier and more open areas than most other large parrot species in its range, but also found in savannas and dry forests (caatinga). Flight call is repeated screeching “crrreeh.”
