Moluccan Spectacled Monarch

Symposiachrus bimaculatus

A slim and elegant songbird with a longish tail. Varies considerably across its range, which consists of the northern Moluccas from Morotai and Halmahera south to Seram and Ambon. Slate-gray above with a white belly and undertail; also note white tail corners. Birds on Seram and Ambon have an orange throat and breast, but generally limited black on the face; elsewhere, blobby-looking black mask and throat are more extensive. Forages actively in forests and forest edges, sometimes with mixed flocks. Song consists of slow, even whistles, sometimes with a buzzy quality. Calls include short, harsh “chet” notes.

Caribbean Martin

Caribbean Martin

Progne dominicensis

A graceful aerial feeder found over a wide variety of open habitats, especially near water, including marshes and towns. Often seen on exposed perches including power and telephone lines in villages. Commonly found in flocks of up to twenty birds, sometimes mixing with other swallows and martins. Note the male’s diagnostic glossy purple-blue plumage and snow-white belly. Females and immatures are similarly patterned, but have brown mixed with the blue and are probably not safely separable from Cuban Martin. Female and immature Purple Martins are very similar, but they often have a scaly breast and finely streaked belly, with less contrast between belly and chest. Notably, Cuban and Purple Martins are not present in this species’ range from March to September. Calls include a harsh “churr,” a buzzy “zwick-zwick,” and a musical buzzy burbling.

White-eared Night Heron

White-eared Night Heron

Oroanassa magnifica

Rare and elusive night-heron with a bug-eyed, almost “alien,” appearance. Highly localized, seldom encountered far from its nesting colonies and roost sites. Black above with gray streaking on the chest and a clean white-and-orange head pattern, though this can be hard to see in poor lighting. Forages quietly in well-shaded forest streams, but most reliably seen in its small breeding colonies, usually hidden deep in a stand of bamboo or evergreen trees.

Spectacled Eider

Spectacled Eider

Somateria fischeri

This peculiar Arctic sea duck breeds on the tundra in Alaska and far eastern Russia and winters in massive flocks among pack ice in the Bering Sea. Males have a unique olive-green head with white goggles, a dark breast, and a carrot-orange bill. Females are brown overall with pale goggles. Rarely seen away from a few key sites in Alaska, usually in small numbers. Compare with other eider species; even the dullest young females have pale goggle pattern on head.
