White-naped Seedeater

A gray-headed, pale-eyed, brown-backed hawk with a streak down the center of the throat, bold streaking on white underparts, and barred thighs. Shows whitish underwings with scattered dark markings at the rear and tips, and a barred tail. Immature is brown-headed with rufous markings on underside. Found in forest and mangroves from lowlands to mountains on Sulawesi. Gray head and central throat stripe make adult distinctive. Immature shows barring restricted to thighs, unlike immature Japanese and Chinese Sparrowhawks, and poorly marked underwings, unlike Japanese Sparrowhawk. Call reported as a “kik-kik-kik.”

Often inconspicuous heron, roosts in trees by day. Feeds nocturnally, specializing on crabs. Adults have bold black-and-white head pattern and gray body. Brown immatures similar to Black-crowned Night-Heron. Yellow-crowned has longer legs and neck; thicker bill. Legs project beyond the tail in flight. Juvenile Yellow-crowned has smaller white spots on wing coverts than Black-crowned.

Very small, rather insectlike hummingbird found locally in foothills and highlands; uncommon. Occurs mainly in shrubby areas with flower banks, within areas of open woodland and forest. When feeding at flowers, flies slowly and methodically, like a big bee, often with the tail held cocked. Best field mark is the big white rump patches, which contribute to the beelike aspect. Male has long, forked tail (usually closed in a point) with white bands. Female is rather plain but is distinctly buffy below.
