Unicolored Blackbird

Agelasticus cyanopus

Medium-sized blackbird with a long, thin bill that is found in marshes and reedbeds. Males are all black, whereas females are highly variable across their range. Northern females from Amapá, Pará, Maranhão, and French Guiana are mostly black with an olive belly. Those from southeast Brazil are dark brownish olive above and dark yellow below. Those from central-southern South America are brown above with black streaks, a faint yellow eyebrow, and yellow underparts. The song is a rattle followed by a series of trills.

识别特征

The male unicolored blackbird is befitting of its name, with entirely glossy black plumage and dark eyes. However, the species exhibits sexual dimorphism; the female is streaked brown and black with a yellow belly streaked with brown. The face has a dark mask and the wings are reddish-brown edged with black. Females from the lower Amazon region and southeastern Brazil have a generally duller colouration with less rufous wings and less yellow underparts. The legs and the iris are black and the bill is long and sharply pointed. The male could be confused with the velvet-fronted grackle or the chopi blackbird. Its call of this bird is a loud "tchew-tchew-tchew" which is sung from an elevated position, and it also produces various trills and rattling sounds which vary in tone and pitch.

分布与栖息地

The unicolored blackbird is native to South America where its range extends from northern Bolivia and southern Brazil to northern Argentina, including much of the lower Amazon region. It is found in marshes, near the edges of ponds and lakes and in adjacent grassland, and its altitudinal range is up to about 600 metres (2,000 ft). It is especially common in the Brazilian Pantanal.

行为

This bird usually occurs in pairs and is much less gregarious than the chestnut-capped blackbird which is found in similar swampy habitat. It moves about on floating vegetation and forages among reeds, never straying far from water.

Montane Blue Swallow

Montane Blue Swallow

Hirundo atrocaerulea

Unmistakable blue-black swallow with incredibly long tail streamers. Can show small and irregular white patches on the body. Breeds in moist montane grassland. On migration and the wintering grounds, occurs more widely in open habitats including wetlands and cultivation. Rare and declining. Dark like a sawwing, but separated by glossy-blue coloration and longer tail streamers.

Southern Double-collared Sunbird

Southern Double-collared Sunbird

Cinnyris chalybeus

A small sunbird. The male has a pale gray belly and relatively narrow red breast band. The female is overall gray-brown. Pairs and small groups visit a broad variety of habitats. The species gives a characteristic short two-note “cher-cher” call and a rapid high-pitched song of up-and-down notes. The only similar species it overlaps with is Greater Double-collared Sunbird, which differs by being 20% larger, with a longer heavier bill, a much broader red breast band in the male, and a slower song.

Ash-browed Spinetail

Ash-browed Spinetail

Cranioleuca curtata

Fairly small rufous-brown bird found on the east slope of the Andes from Colombia to Bolivia. Wings and tail are bright rufous, contrasting with duller brown body and head. Note rufous cap and slightly paler eyebrow. Compare with Red-faced Spinetail, which has entirely rufous cheek and crown. Look for singles or pairs in the middle levels and canopy of montane forest and edge from around 900 to 2,000 m. Forages with mixed-species flocks, hitching along branches and probing into patches of moss and clumps of dead leaves.
