Southern Double-collared Sunbird
Cinnyris chalybeus
A small sunbird. The male has a pale gray belly and relatively narrow red breast band. The female is overall gray-brown. Pairs and small groups visit a broad variety of habitats. The species gives a characteristic short two-note “cher-cher” call and a rapid high-pitched song of up-and-down notes. The only similar species it overlaps with is Greater Double-collared Sunbird, which differs by being 20% larger, with a longer heavier bill, a much broader red breast band in the male, and a slower song.

This sunbird is common in gardens, fynbos, forests and coastal scrub. The southern double-collared sunbird breeds from April to December, depending on region. The closed oval nest is constructed from grass, lichen and other plant material, bound together with spider webs. It has a side entrance which sometimes has a porch, and is lined with wool, plant down and feathers.

The southern double-collared sunbird is usually seen singly or in small groups. Its flight is fast and direct on short wings. It lives mainly on nectar from flowers, but takes some fruit, and, especially when feeding young, insects and spiders. It can take nectar by hovering like a hummingbird, but usually perches to feed most of the time.<p>The call is a hard chee-chee, and the song is high pitched jumble of tinkling notes, rising and falling in pitch and tempo for 3–5 seconds or more.

Kalao Blue Flycatcher
Cyornis kalaoensis
A recently split species from Kalao island in Indonesia. Deep blue upperparts with slightly paler brow, black chin and sides to the face, orange belly, and white throat. Chest and base to the undertail are white in the male and washed orange in the female. Found in forest patches, edge and scrub where fairly inconspicuous but confiding. Unmistakable in range. Vocalizations are not well known.

A thrush-sized olive-colored songbird with a long, fairly heavy bill. Plumage uniform olive-green except for narrow yellow chin, yellow patch between the bill and the eye, and partial yellow eye-ring above the eye. Pairs or small groups occupy forest, degraded forest, edges, and plantations from sea level to foothills. Unmistakable; limited to the island of Buru. Song starts with several soft “pip” or “chek” notes, then explodes in a series of variable whistles, e.g. “WEE-WEE-WEE-WEK-pewee-pewee-WEE-WEE.” Calls include dry “chek” notes and rasping “chirrrik” calls.
Bimaculated Lark
Melanocorypha bimaculata
Chunky ground-dwelling songbird with large-headed, short-tailed profile, found in arid open areas such as deserts and steppe. Readily confused with other large larks, but look for the bulky, dark-tipped bill, rounded ear patch, and a black band below the throat with a break in the middle. Calandra Lark is similar but shows a bright white edge to the trailing edge of the wing and blackish underwings in flight. Song is a long series of grating warbles, whistles, and twitters. Calls are buzzy and rather deep.
