Subtropical Pygmy-Owl
Glaucidium parkeri
Rarely encountered owl found in cloud forest along the east slope of the Andes. Small with a round head, yellow eyes, white-speckled crown, and white bands on wings and tail. Overall plumage coloration ranges from brown to bright cinnamon. Similar to Andean Pygmy-Owl, but smaller, with a shorter tail that typically shows at most two white bands. Identification should be confirmed by voice; song is a series of three toots repeated every few seconds.

The subtropical pygmy owl is about 14 to 14.5 cm (5.5 to 5.7 in) long; three males had an average weight of 61.6 g (2.17 oz). It has a widespread brown morph and a rare rufous morph. Adults of the former have a grayish-brown crown; the crown and the sides of the face have prominent white spots. Its nape, like those of most Glaucidium pygmy owls, has black "false eyes". The back and rump are dark brown and the tail blackish with spotty white bands. The underparts are white with broad dull reddish-olive brown streaks. The juvenile plumage has not been described.

The subtropical pygmy owl is found on the east slope of the Andes from far southwestern Colombia through Ecuador and Peru to central Bolivia. In elevation it ranges from 1,100 to 2,000 m (3,600 to 6,600 ft) in Ecuador, between 950 and 1,600 m (3,120 and 5,250 ft) in Peru, and between 600 and 1,600 m (2,000 and 5,200 ft) in Bolivia. It inhabits humid montane forest.

Nothing has been published about its diet, which is presumed to be large arthropods and small vertebrates.<p>Nothing has been published about the subtropical pygmy owl's breeding phenology. It is presumed to nest in tree cavities such as old woodpecker holes.<p>The subtropical pygmy owl's song is "three or four short phrases (normally 2-4 or 6 in intervals of several seconds) of low tone increasing when ending the two notes hu-hu, hu, and having a hesitation before the last note".

Actinodura egertoni
Set apart from other barwings in its range by its pure white belly and an orangish wash over the front of the face. Like other barwings, it forages in pairs and small flocks, sometimes with other species. Gives a range of different calls, with its most distinctive one being a three-note whistle in which the third note is considerably lower than the first two.
Rusty-winged Starling

A rather small, pale grayish-brown starling, paler on Vanikoro, with a smudgy black patch in front of the eye and distinctive rusty wings. Found in forest and secondary growth, especially montane forest. Similar to Polynesian Starling, but paler above, with a dark eye and more uniform wings. Common call is a melodious “zee-twee.”
White-lored Oriole
Oriolus albiloris
A medium-sized bird of lowland forest and edge in the lowlands and lower mountains on Luzon. Overall yellow in color, slightly darker on the wings and tail, with a reddish bill and a white mark between the bill and the brown eye. Similar to the Isabela Oriole, but slightly smaller, and distinguished by the red bill and the white spot in front of the eye. Gives a whistled song typical of orioles: a medium-pitched whistled phrase of 2-3 notes, usually repeated.
