Rusty-winged Starling

A small, richly rufous-colored owl confined to the island of Sulawesi. Largely chestnut-colored, with white markings on the wings and an entirely rufous head with yellow eyes. Mottled underneath, with a white belly in the southern part of its small range. Inhabits treetops of montane forest, typically in pairs. Lacks the white facial markings of the similar Ochre-bellied Boobook; also occurs at higher elevations and sounds markedly different. Gives a distinctive two-part staccato knocking call, “crock-crock,” often repeated.

Small brownish babbler with a rufous crown. Extremely similar to Rufous-capped Babbler, and often not safely distinguished in areas of overlap. Rufous-fronted averages paler-throated, grayer-faced, less yellow below, has very fine dark streaks on the crown, and may have a duller and shorter crown patch. Song is a variable ascending series of piping “toots” (short whistles): “tu-tu-tutututu!” Calls include quick isolated “chit” and “whit” notes, rolling rattles, and quick notes similar to those from the song. Found from lowlands up into the upper elevations, foraging in forests and edges with dense low vegetation. Buff-chested Babbler of northeastern South Asia and Indochina, formerly an independent species, is now treated as part of Rufous-fronted.

A tiny bird with a slim, dark, curved bill. The upperparts are olive-green, and the pale underparts have a smudge of yellow on the belly. Flits about restlessly in treetops in search of fruits and flowers. Usually solitary or in pairs. Hard to locate in the canopy, but its buzzy single-noted calls often give away its presence.
