Blue-winged Goose
Cyanochen cyanoptera
A chunky mid-sized goose. Standing bird looks fairly dull, gray and dirty white, sometimes showing blue along the edge of the wing. Flying bird shows pale blue and iridescent green patches in the upperwing and a white patch on the underwing. Found in montane wetlands and adjacent grasslands, often in pairs or small groups, occasionally in large flocks. Less colorful and boldly marked than other similarly-sized waterfowl species. The calls are high-pitched whistles and yelps.

This is a stocky grey-brown bird about 70 centimetres (28 in) long with a slightly paler head and upper neck. It has a small black bill and black legs. A chunky mid-sized goose. Standing bird looks fairly dull, gray and dirty white, sometimes showing blue along the edge of the wing. In flight, this species shows a pale blue forewing. Sexes are similar, but immature birds are duller. The plumage of these birds is thick and loose, furlike as an adaptation to the cold of the Ethiopian highlands.<p>The blue-winged goose is a quiet species, but both sexes may give a soft whistle; it does not honk or cackle like the true geese.

The habitats of the blue-winged goose are primarily rivers, freshwater lakes, swamps, freshwater marshes, water storage areas, and subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland or grassland.

It feeds by grazing, and is apparently largely nocturnal, loafing during the day. It can swim and fly well, but this terrestrial bird is reluctant to do either, and is quite approachable. It forms flocks outside the breeding season.<p>It breeds by mountain lakes and streams. This little-known species is believed to build a lined nest amongst grass tussocks, and to lay 6–7 eggs.

Melidectes leucostephes
A fairly large honeyeater of mid-montane forest and edge. Black body with olive wing feathers, boldly patterned with white scales on the back, flanks and dappled white on the chest. Large pale blue area of bare facial skin mainly behind the eye and a red wattle on the side of the throat. Co-occurs with Ornate and Cinnamon-browed Melidectes, but Vogelkop has a distinctive facial pattern with pale bill and white lines extending above and below to form a crescent shape. Calls include, loud downward whistles or parrotlike squawking.

Large finch with a long spiky tail. Mostly gray with olive-green wings and tail. Note the bicolored bill (dark above and yellow-orange below) and the broken white eye-ring. Inhabits higher elevations, in dry scrub, rocky areas, and grassy fields with scattered palms. Sings a high, thin “tsi, tsoweee,” repeated continually.
Red-cheeked Wattle-eye

Tiny black-and-white rainforest wattle-eye. Both sexes have a chestnut patch on the side of the face and blue bare skin around the eye, though this eye wattle is larger in males. Found in the understory of rainforest. Inconspicuous and difficult to observe; most readily detected by vocalizations. These are variable, but consist of piercing, high-pitched whistles which are repeated, sometimes for a long time. Somewhat similar to West African and Chestnut Wattle-eyes, but does not have a black chest band or extensive chestnut throat.
