Red-capped Flowerpecker
Dicaeum geelvinkianum
Tiny bird, black above, pale below, with fiery bright red cap, red chest patch, and red rump. Plain juvenile has orange bill but otherwise unmarked; lacks the reddish undertail of juvenile Mistletoebird. Found in mangroves and forest on New Guinea and islands in the northern Torres Strait. Calls similar to Mistletoebird, a high-pitched short "seeep" and buzzing sounds.

The red-capped flowerpecker (Dicaeum geelvinkianum) is a small passerine bird endemic to, and widespread within, New Guinea and adjacent islands. It has recently been split from the olive-crowned flowerpecker Dicaeum pectorale.

White-bellied Tit
Melaniparus albiventris
A mostly black tit with a white belly and white marks in the wings. Found in rather moist savanna and woodland and along forest edges, mostly at middle and higher elevations. Usually in pairs or small groups, and often joins mixed-species flocks. Call is a classic tit “chee-chee-di-di-di,” raspy and often repeated. The song consists of musical or slightly burry whistled phrases of 2-3 notes, each phrase repeated 2-3 times. Similar to black-tits, but easily separated by the white belly.

Lanius somalicus
A small black, white, and gray shrike. The sexes look similar. Note the white patches at the bottom middle and near the end of the wing. Along with the white outer tail, these can be conspicuous in flight. Found in dry savanna and grassland. Perches up conspicuously, often in pairs. Very similar to Taita Fiscal, but has multiple white patches on each wing instead of just one. The repetitive vocalizations include scratchy notes, usually higher and rougher than those of Taita Fiscal, often delivered in a rising pattern.
Spotted Nothura
Nothura maculosa
Small sandy-colored tinamou; largely yellow below with a cryptically patterned back and head with a mix of dark and pale feathers. Mostly found in natural grasslands and savannas as well as in cultivated areas and can be locally common, but difficult to spot. The song is a repetitive “Tchip, tchip, tchip, tchip” or an insect-like “triiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii” trill.
