Maroon-belted Chat-Tyrant

Large terrestrial bird of alpine shrublands and meadows. Matte brown overall, with red skin around the eye, white barring on the back, rusty throat, and rusty flank striping. Forages in pairs in grassy areas near cover; male has a larger red eye patch than female and is marginally larger. Song is comprised of loud, squeaky, inflected clucks.

Small francolin with an unusually long and downcurved bill. The male and female are very different: the male has a white eye-stripe and heavy streaking below, while the female has plain rufous underparts. Found on and around rock outcrops in semi-desert brushland and arid savanna. Usually in pairs and small groups. Main call is a very loud, repeated, up-and-down “cheetle-chiddle” duet. Distinguished from other francolins in its range by lack of red bill and/or facial skin.

A mid-sized, stocky, black-and-white barbet with a yellowish eyebrow, red forecrown spot and heavily spotted underparts. It is a low-density resident in broadleaved woodland, particularly Miombo (Brachystegia) and Burkea, where it is mostly solitary, but occasionally joins flocks to forage. Similar Pied and Red-fronted barbets have neater faces, lacking the brownish ears and scaly sides to the throat of Miombo Barbet, and their ranges barely overlap. Calls a distinctive melancholy “poooop” 6–7 times, often accompanied with a nasal repeated “nyeeeeaar”.
