Tepui Antpitta
Myrmothera simplex
Rotund, terrestrial bird of tepui highland forests. Rich brown above and pale gray-brown below, with a white spot behind the eye, long legs, and virtually no tail. Found at middle and high elevations; most common above 800 m. Always observed on or close to ground. Forages in leaf litter and among mossy rocks for insects. Does not usually follow mixed-species flocks. Far more often heard than seen, but seems much less shy than many other antpittas; may run along ground to within a few meters of observers in response to playback or imitation of song. Song is 6–12 hollow whistles, the series rising slightly in pitch, similar to song of Thrush-like Antpitta but higher-pitched and often longer in duration. Alarm call is a melodious, hollow chuckle, virtually identical to same call of Thrush-like Antpitta; the two species do not overlap in elevational range.

Furtive Flycatcher
Ficedula disposita
A small bird of lowland secondary forest with bamboo in northern Luzon. Dark brown above with a gray band across the chest, a white throat and belly, a brown rump, rufous outer tail feathers, and a black terminal band on the tail. Similar to Ashy-breasted Flycatcher, but differs in tail pattern. Song is a variable three-noted whistled phrase, “piii puu piiit!” with the middle note lower.
Greater Short-toed Lark
Calandrella brachydactyla
Small pale lark, usually seen foraging on the ground in open areas with scattered low vegetation, cultivated fields, or at roadsides. Keeps low to the ground, runs quickly. Short bill and rounded head; long tertial feathers largely hide the wings at rest. Dark patch at the neck sides and largely unstreaked belly distinctive in most plumages. Drifting, hovering song flight delivered with tail folded.
Chestnut-crowned Warbler
Phylloscopus castaniceps
Small, distinctive warbler; combination of orange crown, white throat, green wings, and yellow belly are unique among the region’s warblers. Found in mountainous regions with dense cover. More often heard than seen; song is a thin, high-pitched series of “see” notes. Occasionally moves with mixed flocks but often forages individually or in pairs.
