Collared Sunbird

A plain fulvetta, fairly similar in appearance to the “Gray-cheeked Fulvettas”. Range of the northern subspecies overlaps slightly with that of Yunnan Fulvetta, from which it can be distinguished by duller, more olive-green upperparts, a bolder black line above the eye, and colder gray-washed underparts. Southern subspecies, found in peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand, is richer brown above with a whiter belly. Fast twittering song is comparable to that of Yunnan Fulvetta but somewhat quicker and shorter. Dry churring rattles are likewise similar to those of Yunnan Fulvetta. Despite its name, does not necessarily inhabit higher altitudes than Yunnan Fulvetta, and altitudinal ranges do overlap.

Rare and endangered, a bright yellow warbler with gray head, very short white eyebrow, and orange legs. Sexes similar. Uncommon, often in pairs, family groups, and mixed species flocks in understory and edges of cloud forest and bamboo patches, but always close to areas with mature forest. Vocal in early morning, with distinctive calls and song, often very loud in duet. Song is a melodious, repetitive, and loud five-note “we-chee-cHEEw, wee-cHEEw;” call is a “chack” or a short trill; duets are the combination of song and “chack” calls at the same time. Similar to the more common Golden-crowned Warbler, but lacking black crown stripes and gray back. Endemic to the Turimiquire region of northeastern Venezuela.

A small, slim, fairly long-tailed buzzard. Gray and brown on the upperparts and rufous on the underparts. The white throat has a black line down the center. In flight, reveals distinctive rufous patches on the tops of the wings, with mostly white underwings. Found in a variety of savanna and grassland habitats. A migratory species that is often found in flocks, especially near fires. Best told from other buzzards by its structure, and in flight by its rufous wing panels. The call is a series of “ki” notes.
