Bar-winged Oriole
Icterus maculialatus
Very local, poorly known black-and-yellow oriole of Chiapas and northern Central America. Favors brushy oak woodlands and semi-deciduous scrubby areas, especially with oaks. Associates with other orioles at flowering and fruiting trees, but often remains inside cover and thus easily overlooked. Male is the only yellow-and-black oriole in its range with a white wingbar. Female and immature resemble Black-cowled Oriole (usually not in the same areas), but wings grayish (not contrastingly blackish) with narrow whitish wingbar.

Melanesian Kingfisher
Todiramphus tristrami
A Collared-type kingfisher found on a broad band of islands northeast of New Guinea, ranging from the Bismarck Archipelago east to Guadalcanal in the Solomons. Varies across range; note blue-green upperparts, pale collar, slender dark mask, and bicolored bill. Compare with Sacred Kingfisher; Melanesian averages darker and bluer above. Inhabits a range of island habitats, often in coastal regions but also well inland, especially in areas without other kingfishers. Listen for loud, harsh, far-carrying calls.
Golden Pheasant

Shy and surprisingly difficult to find in mixed and conifer woodland, where it runs quickly from detected disturbance. Red-and-gold male stunning and unmistakable. Female differs from Common Pheasant in strongly barred plumage, dull pinkish (not gray) legs and feet and from Lady Amherst’s Pheasant in lighter barring, more orangeish coloration, and the lack of a bare patch of gray skin behind the eye. Native to China but introduced very locally in Britain and Hawaii; however, captive birds might escape anywhere.
Araguaia Spinetail
Synallaxis simoni
Typical spinetail with a long spiky tail, a grayish-brown head, bright cinnamon wings and tail, a white throat, and pale buffy underparts. Sexes similar. Limited range near the Araguaia River in Brazil, where it inhabits the understory of gallery forest. The song is a sharp “keeeu”, often repeated.
