Chestnut-bellied Malkoha

A recently recognized species with a dark greenish back, brighter bluish-green wings, a dark face-mask, a greenish cap, a white collar, and a buffy-orange spot in front of the eye. Bill relatively weak and thin. Found in most habitats, but mainly coastal, preferring mangroves. Very similar to Pacific and Sacred Kingfishers but smaller, with a straighter, less curved bill than both. Lacks buffy underparts of Sacred Kingfisher. Voice little known, but presumably similar to Pacific Kingfisher’s.

Small screech-owl with a scattered distribution in the Andes. It inhabits cloud forest in southeastern Ecuador and northern Peru, as well as a few locations in Colombia and Venezuela. Most birds have bright cinnamon-buff plumage, but some are brown and tan. Distinguished from the similar Rufescent Screech-Owl by the lack of any white marks on the shoulders, and by voice. Song is a fast, rising and falling series of soft “pu” notes. The speed at which the notes are given is quite variable.

Very plain bird of cloud forest along the east slope of the Andes in Ecuador, northern Peru, and far southern Colombia. It usually looks dull brown and featureless, though it may show an olive tinge and paler chin if seen in bright light. Sexes look alike. It is one of several species that together were formerly known as Thrush-like Schiffornis; they differ in range, voice, and elevation. Often best identified by its frequently given song: a wavering whistle that seems out of tune, rising and falling in pitch several times. Stays in the forest understory, and often perches motionless for long periods.
