Gray-headed Greenbul

Gray-headed Greenbul

Phyllastrephus poliocephalus

A large and relatively colorful greenbul of the mountains of Cameroon and southeastern Nigeria. Note the gray head, olive-green back and tail, yellow belly, and white throat. Found in humid forest at middle elevations. A conspicuous species that is usually found in noisy flocks. Larger and more colorful than other greenbuls in its restricted range. Gives nasal, barking calls which often accelerate into a quick series.

Ochre-throated Foliage-gleaner

Ochre-throated Foliage-gleaner

Automolus ochrolaemus

Skulking and generally inconspicuous brown bird of humid tropical forest. Found as singles or pairs, clambering in vine tangles or other dense understory, at times in leaf litter on the forest floor; usually difficult to see clearly. Note the rich buffy throat, conspicuous buffy eyebrow and eyering, and rusty tail on an otherwise plain dark brownish bird. Song is a descending series of nasal notes, speeding up and often sputtering at the end. Occurs from central Panama (where approaches the range of Fawn-throated Foliage-gleaner, and best distinguished by voice) throughout much of northern South America, to central Brazil.

Dusky Parrot

Dusky Parrot

Pionus fuscus

Medium-sized, stocky rainforest parrot. Can appear mostly black even at fairly close range. Tends to occur as single birds or pairs rather than large groups. Flight style distinctive; birds appear to keep wings below the horizontal, rolling from side to side. Usually first detected flying overhead; descends rapidly and silently into forests to feed on fruit and flowers in the canopy. In flight, confusion is possible with Blue-headed Parrot, but Dusky has different flight style with shallower wingbeats and different calls.
