White-flanked Sunbird
Aethopyga eximia
A Javanese highland endemic, found from foothill forest and forest edge up into the low, scrubby growth above the treeline. Long-tailed male is stunning and utterly unmistakable, with a rose-red throat and chest, iridescent blue-green “shield” on the forehead, a smoky dark gray belly, and an iridescent blue tail. Female is much less eye-catching, with a gray head, buffish belly, and brown tail. Both sexes have an olive-brown back and a white streak on the side. Forages actively, sometimes in the lower storeys of forest. Gives bland series of chips, as well as a ringing “dink dink dink!” and a quick, descending “sweep”.

Blue-crowned Laughingthrush
Pterorhinus courtoisi
Stunning laughingthrush with a highly restricted distribution: limited to Wuyuan County in China’s Jiangxi Province. Brown-backed and yellow-bellied, with a black bandit’s mask and a bright blue crown lined with silver on the forehead. Breeds in preserved stands of very tall old trees near rural villages; disperses into mixed hill forest afterwards, where it tends to be more difficult to find. A colonial nester, unusual amongst laughingthrushes. Flock members communicate with one with one another with noisy high-pitched churrs.
Weyns's Weaver
Ploceus weynsi
A chunky weaver with a long, relatively thin bill. The male is distinctive and beautiful, with black upperparts, rusty sides, and a yellow belly. The much duller female is olive-gray above with a dark breast band. Both sexes have a pale eye. Found in forest, plantations, and marshes, often in flocks. Can range widely when not breeding. The female is similar to female Vieillot's Weaver, but has a slightly slimmer bill and darker breast, and is usually associated with the distinctive male. The vocalizations include typical weaver “chek” notes and “radio static” songs.
Lacrimose Mountain Tanager
Anisognathus lacrymosus
A distinctive mountain-tanager with tawny-orange underparts and isolated yellowish patches on cheek and below eye. Otherwise mostly blackish above with blue highlights on wings and tail. Occurs in the Andes from Venezuela to Peru, where it is fairly common in the upper subtropical and temperate zones. Pairs or small groups often follow mixed-species flocks in forested areas and edges.
