Lacrimose Mountain Tanager

Handsome and distinctive duck. Sexes look similar, but male averages brighter. Note the striking face pattern (duller on young and on adults in late summer), bright rusty sides, and bold white forewing patches that show in flight. Often common in wetlands, marshes, at lakes, and along river mouths. Associates readily with other waterfowl, but more often seen on shore, grazing in grassy areas.

Large yellow-bellied flycatcher with gray head, dull greenish back, and brownish wings and tail. Primarily a Mexican species, with range extending north into Texas and south to Belize and Guatemala. Occurs in brushy woodlands and other semiopen habitats, often near water. Listen for single “pick” or buzzy “breer” calls. Nearly identical to Tropical Kingbird, which overlaps throughout range; best separated by voice. Larger and longer-billed than Western and Cassin’s Kingbird; also note paler brownish tail.

Rather large rosefinch of the Himalayas. Male is dark pink with broad pale eyebrows and two rows of fine white specks on the wings. Female is dark buffy brown with pale eyebrows. Himalayan White-browed Rosefinch female has uniformly whiter underparts. Spot-winged breeds in alpine meadows, scrub, and conifer forest edge; winters in similarly scrubby areas as well as forests lower down. Calls include a distinctive wheezy “cheWEE!”
