Comoro Cuckooshrike

Ceblepyris cucullatus

A medium-sized bird with a gray back, a black hood, and pale underparts. There is an unusual and rare olive morph in which the head and back are olive-gray and the underparts greenish-buff. The juvenile is a drastically different-looking heavily streaked and spotted bird. Found locally in montane forest on the islands of Grand Comoro and Moheli. The most common vocalizations are a descending high-pitched series of soft whistles and a mild, chatty series of “chew” and “tew” notes. Within its small range, most similar to Grand Comoro and Moheli Bulbuls, but easily separated by the paler underparts and lack of an orange bill.

Sumatran Shortwing

Sumatran Shortwing

Brachypteryx saturata

A small, dark songster of montane rainforest floor and undergrowth on Sumatra. Male is overall dark slaty-gray but slightly paler on the belly. Female is similar but duller and even paler on the belly. Both sexes have thin, white eyebrows and long, black legs. Forages on the ground but also hops on logs and low branches. Can be confiding but moves rapidly when alarmed. Superficially similar to Sumatran Blue Robin but shortwing’s tail is shorter and it lacks the white forehead. Song is a cheerful, random series of up-and-down whistles. Call, a sharp “click!”

Black-rumped Waxbill

Black-rumped Waxbill

Estrilda troglodytes

A tiny finch of dry grasslands, thickets, and grassy woodlands. Similar to Common Waxbill, but note black rump, unbarred back, white (not dark) undertail, and square-tipped tail. Sexes are similar, but males have a faint pink wash on the underparts that females lack. Gives various nasal and rasping calls; song is two note ‘chee-churr!’. Native to Africa and introduced to several Caribbean islands, Japan, Spain, and the Hawaiian islands (apparently now extirpated).

Chestnut-breasted Whiteface

Chestnut-breasted Whiteface

Small bird with stubby bill, found in open shrubland in stony country of arid northeastern South Australia. Warm brown above, white below, with broad rusty-brown chest band, reddish-brown marks on the flanks, pale eye, grayish throat, and white mark above bill. Forages on the ground in small flocks. Call is a steady warbling twitter.
