Yellow-streaked Honeyeater
Ptiloprora meekiana
A rare, medium-sized honeyeater of mid-montane forest canopy. Overall yellowish color with faint streaking, strongest on the head. Two prominent lines behind the eye, dark below and pale above, also a prominent yellowish tuft in the flank. Similar to Gray-streaked and Rufous-backed Honeyeaters, but Yellow-streaked is slightly smaller and has a yellowish rather than gray base color and lacks the rufous flanks. Also similar to Leaden but is slightly larger and again differs in color. Call, a meek, double, downslurred whistle “piuu piuu”.

Karimui Owlet-nightjar
Aegotheles terborghi
Little-known medium-sized owlet-nightjar restricted to the mountainous Karimui Basin of eastern Papua New Guinea. Dark gray overall with fine barring; note chevrons on breast, thick black “eyebrows” that wrap around the head, and a black crown stripe extending down between the eyes; compare with other quite differently-marked montane owlet-nightjars, such as Mountain and Feline. Vocalizations poorly known.

Eared Grebe
Podiceps nigricollis
Small, compact grebe with thin pointed bill. Breeding adults mostly black with chestnut flanks; look for wispy golden plumes on cheek and peaked head shape. In winter, grayish overall with a dark cap blending into the dark cheek, and a smudgy dark neck. Red eye visible at close range. Breeds on marshy ponds and lakes; during migration and winter, often seen on large lakes, bays, and open ocean. Compare with Horned Grebe, especially in winter. Eared is thinner-necked and smaller-headed, with more peaked crown, darker cheek, and no pale tip on bill.

Black-thighed Grosbeak
Pheucticus tibialis
Large-billed bird with yellow head, body, and black back and wings. Look for massive triangular bill and obvious white patch on wing. Sexes similar. Found in open wooded areas like forest edges, second growth, and gardens. Usually seen singly or in pairs.
