Karimui Owlet-nightjar

A large scops-owl restricted to Flores and Sumbawa. Grayish-brown overall. Face gray with a black facial border. Shows a dark bill, ear tufts, a dark crown, bold black streaks on paler grayish underparts, and dark brown upperparts with white wing markings. Juvenile paler, with reduced markings and rufous appearance. Inhabits canopy of forested lowlands and foothills. Larger and grayer than Flores Scops-Owl, with dark bill and forehead and black-streaked underparts. Larger than Moluccan Scops-Owl, with a different call: a single gruff “koh,” repeated often.

Large, stocky, long-tailed sparrow. Uniform matte brown, with rich cinnamon tones on face and orange undertail coverts. Also note very limited streaking on upper breast with no central spot. Occurs in chaparral and other tangled shrubby, dry habitats. At home in neighborhoods and gardens in lowland California towns. Forages primarily for seeds by running and hopping on the ground. Visits feeders. Essentially no range overlap with the very similar Canyon Towhee; also note California has plain brown crown and obvious rusty tones on face.

Small yellowish-brown babbler with striped underparts and a rufous forehead and wings. Rustles about in the undergrowth and middle levels of forested habitats, often joining mixed-species foraging flocks. Strange bouncing song is a long monotone series of hollow pings. Chatters harshly.
