Golden-tufted Grackle
Macroagelaius imthurni
A medium-sized blackbird of tepui highland forests. Adults are entirely black except for yellow tufts at bend of wing; young birds are dull blackish-gray and lack the tufts. Noisy groups range through montane forest canopy and along savanna edges, probing flowers, leaf bases, and bark crevices; may pause to loaf, preen, and call for extended periods. Makes a variety of squeaking and chuckling calls, many with a strongly metallic quality, unlike any other bird in tepui highlands. Epaulet Oriole is also black and yellow, but note grackle’s yellow pectoral tufts (not shoulders), stockier build, thicker bill, and tendency to occur in single-species flocks.

Red-bellied Parrot
Poicephalus rufiventris
A chunky, mid-sized parrot with a big bill and a short tail. Males have a large orange patch on the underparts and underwings. Females are much plainer. Found in savanna and woodland habitat, often around fruiting trees, usually in pairs. The calls include screaming notes and quieter whistles. Similar to Meyer’s and Brown-headed Parrots, but males separated by the orange in their plumage, and females by their lack of a yellow underwing patch.

Forpus passerinus
A very small, gregarious parrot that prefers open habitats where it feeds on fruits, flowers, and seeds. The only parrotlet to occur in the Caribbean. Elsewhere told from other parrotlets by uniform lime-green color (plus blue wing patch in males) and pale bill. Most often seen flying in small tight flocks that frequently tilt and make abrupt turns. Usually first detected by its calls, which are a combination of shrill chatterings, squeaks, twitters.

Halcyon cyanoventris
Large kingfisher with a massive lipstick-red bill. Note dark head, dark chestnut throat and chest, purplish body, electric blue wings, and large black shoulder patch. Bright white wing patches revealed in flight. Uses a variety of both wet and dry lowland and foothill habitats, including ponds, mangroves, agricultural fields, open forest, and scrub. Can be close to human habitation. Gives high piping screams, often in series.
