White-crowned Robin-Chat

Cossypha albicapillus

A large and colorful robin-chat with a black face mask that continues onto the chin. The color of the crown is pure white in the far western part of the range, and white with black markings elsewhere. A shy bird of dense thickets, gardens, and forest, often along rivers and streams. Similar to Snowy-crowned Robin-Chat, but larger, usually with black markings in the white crown, and with a black rather than orange chin. Usually detected by song, a fast and complex mix of musical whistles.

Purple-gaped Honeyeater

Purple-gaped Honeyeater

Lichenostomus cratitius

Small, plain honeyeater found in mallee woodland and heathland across southern South Australia as well as in parts of southwestern Western Australia. Olive brown above, paler below, with gray crown and dark gray cheek patch edged in yellow, a thin purple line separating throat from ear coverts, and entirely black bill. Calls include loud squeaks and a rattling trill.

Long-billed Hermit

Long-billed Hermit

Phaethornis longirostris

Spectacular large hummingbird of humid tropical lowlands. Favors shady forest understory and edges, especially with patches of Heliconia flowers. Males sit and sing tirelessly from perches in the understory while pumping their tail. When feeding, hovers briefly with long white tail streamers held nearly vertical and shoots off with an explosive squeak. Note the striped face, very long, arched bill, and rather drab plumage. Unlike many hummingbirds, hermits do not defend a patch of flowers but zip between widely scattered flowers, a strategy known as traplining (like it is checking widely scattered nectar traps).

Cocos Booby

Cocos Booby

Sula brewsteri

Large seabird of inshore and offshore waters in tropical regions of the eastern Pacific Ocean. Mostly brown, with a sharp white belly. The head and neck color vary geographically, and can be solidly brown or variably whitish. Immatures have a variably mottled brown belly that rarely looks solidly brown. Compare with other boobies. Often seen from beaches, sometimes just beyond the breakers. Usually plunge-dives from a shallow angle, much closer to the water than Blue-footed Booby. Breeds in colonies on offshore islands, nesting on the ground.
