Southern Pochard

Small oceanic gull with stunning wing pattern. All ages show distinctive black outer wing, white inner wing, and dark back. Breeding adults have a dark gray head and black bill with yellow tip. Nonbreeding adults have similar distinctive bill but with a mostly white face. Young birds are browner above than adults, with a crisp scaly pattern on the back. Breeds on Arctic tundra. Often seen in flocks during migration and winter, generally far offshore. Rarely seen from shore, but occasionally shows up at large inland bodies of water.

Small, boldly colored tanager found in vegetation around lakes and rivers. Bright red head and black-and-white plumage are instantly recognizable. Quite social and often found in pairs or groups as they forage low in waterside vegetation. Frequently perches on branches sticking out of the water.

Tiny flycatcher; common and widespread, but heard far more often than seen. When seen well, note pale eye and elongated crown feathers, giving this bird a hammer-headed appearance. Found in humid forest understory and second-growth as well as in savanna woodland. Frequently found near gaps and vine tangles where it sits quietly, then sallies upward to glean insects from leaves. Song is an irregular series of ticking notes that sometimes runs into a trill, often given for long periods throughout the day. Similar to Double-banded Pygmy-Tyrant, but vocalizations are less buzzy.
